Future Lab Assistants
Students who have completed Introduction to Cognitive Science may receive independent study
research credit, for working as a lab assistant in the Sentence Comprehension Lab, which is
funded by the National Institutes of Health. Lab assistants will learn about methods for
measuring eye fixations to test hypotheses about the mental processes that occur when we read
sentences. Each lab assistant works on a pre-designed experiment to learn about data collection
methods including testing participants, processing and analyzing data, designing a follow-up
experiment, and pre-testing and preparing materials.
Lab assistants must commit to working in the lab for at least two semesters and may work as
many as four semesters. Experimental Psychology is required for the second semester. The first
two semesters require a commitment of 9 hours per week including a mandatory lab meeting on
Wednesday at 9 AM. The lab manager prepares a schedule for all lab assistants depending on
their availability and the needs of the lab. The lab is open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM
into the evening.
At the end of the first semester, students submit a report on assigned readings on eye tracking
methodology. At the end of the second semester, students submit a full APA-style research
report that includes a report on assigned readings and that forms the basis of a poster presentation
at the Montclair State Student Research Symposium. At the end of later semesters, students
submit a full APA-style research report on follow-up experiments that include additional
research literature and that forms the basis of presentations at professional conferences and
journal manuscripts.
